First Land Transit Convoy Crosses
The Syrian General Directorate of Ports and Customs announced today, Monday, the passage of the first transit truck convoy coming from Turkey and heading to Iraqi territory. This crossing took place via the Al-Yaarubiyah border crossing, in a step aimed at revitalizing transport movement and enhancing regional trade exchange through Syrian territory.
Enhancing Syria's Logistics Position
The Directorate explained via a Facebook post that this convoy is part of ongoing efforts to reactivate international transit routes. These efforts aim to strengthen Syria's position as a vital logistical corridor connecting countries in the region, thereby supporting commercial movement and improving the efficiency of transport and supply chains.
Facilitating Border Procedures
The Directorate is working to facilitate transit and customs clearance procedures, in addition to enhancing operational and logistical readiness at border crossings. This ensures the smooth flow of trucks and goods, and improves the efficiency of performance and services provided to the transport and trade sectors in general.
Government Plan to Revive Transit
Syrian Minister of Transport, Yaarob Badr, revealed last month a government initiative to reactivate road transit through Syrian territory. This route is considered strategic for supporting the economy and strengthening connectivity with countries in the region, according to statements reported by the Ministry of Transport.
Transit Activity Before 2011
Minister Badr noted that the transit sector witnessed extensive activity before 2011, with approximately 115,000 trucks crossing annually from Turkey towards Jordan and the Gulf states. This amounted to about 300 trucks daily, before activity significantly declined due to the closure of crossings and security challenges.
Opportunities to Restore Economic Role
The relative improvement in stability and the resumption of relations with several neighboring countries offer an opportunity to gradually revive this activity. This step is part of a plan aimed at sustainably restoring the economic role of transit, according to the Minister of Transport's statements.
Precedent of Maritime Transit
In a related context, the General Directorate of Ports and Customs announced last month the arrival of the first transit container through Syrian territory. This container came from Aqaba Port in Jordan and was destined for Latakia Port, reflecting the activation of regional transit routes.
