Tartous Port Receives 32,000 Transit Livestock from Romania to Jordan

Tartous Port received a large shipment of livestock from Romania, transiting through Syrian territory to Jordan.

Tartous Port yesterday, Tuesday, received two vessels from Romania carrying approximately 32,000 head of sheep and calves. This shipment is part of the active transit movement through Syrian territory, destined for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Details of the Arriving Shipment

SANA news agency reported that the first shipment included 500 calves and 15,000 head of male sheep. The second vessel carried 16,000 head of male sheep, completing the total cargo of both ships.

Unloading and Inspection Procedures

Mohannad Qaddour, Head of the Animal Health and Production Department, confirmed that unloading operations were carried out under the supervision of the competent authorities. This included the General Authority for Ports, Customs, and Port Management, along with thorough health and veterinary examinations to ensure the animals' safety before their overland transport to Jordan.

Growing Transit Movement

For his part, Riad Judy, Secretary of Tartous Port Customs, indicated that the arrival of the two vessels reflects the increasing transit movement through the port. He considered this activity to confirm regional companies' reliance on the port as a logistics hub, contributing to stimulating commercial activity and supporting the national economy.

Increased Activity at Tartous Port

Tartous Port has recently witnessed significant activity in shipping and transit movement, benefiting from its technical readiness and capacity to receive large vessels and diverse goods. Last October, the port received a shipment of live calves from Brazil destined for Iraq.

Trade Figures Through the Port

Total import and export operations at Tartous Port exceeded 2.75 million tons during the first four months of 2026, of which 2.25 million tons were imported goods. Last April, the port also received 100 vessels, with imported goods totaling 720,000 tons.
